What is ethernet cable?
Ethernet cable is a common type of network cable used with wired networks. You will get a better internet connection than Wi-Fi via Ethernet cable. Ethernet cables connect devices such as PCs, routers, and switches within a local area network.
Ethernet cables are manufactured in two basic forms:
- Solid Ethernet cables offer slightly better performance and better protection against electrical interference. They are commonly used in fixed locations on business networks, underwiring inside office walls, or on laboratory floors.
- Stranded Ethernet cables are less prone to physical cracks and breaks, making them more suitable for commuters or in-home network setups.
Connect the computer to your modem via an Ethernet cable –
Follow the steps below to connect your laptop or computer directly to your Telstra-supplied modem.
- First, connect the Ethernet cable to the yellow LAN port of your modem.
- Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your computer or laptop.
- Make sure the Ethernet light is green and flashing next to the port you used on your modem.
Ethernet Cable Limitations –
A single Ethernet cable has a maximum distance capability, meaning that the cable has an upper limit on how long it can be before a signal loss occurs (called attenuation). This problem occurs because the electrical resistance of a long cable affects performance.
CAT5 cable has a maximum length of 100 m (328 ft) before attenuation occurs. The CAT6 can go up to 700 feet. Ethernet cables can be long but there is a potential for signal loss, especially if they pass near large electrical equipment.

If you don’t see any lights flashing :
- Turn off your modem.
- Unplug the Ethernet cable from your modem and plug it into a different yellow port on your modem.
- Turn your modem back on and wait for it to power on completely, then check that the Ethernet light next to the port you used is green.
